Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

The long awaited 6th film in the Harry Potter series is here at last. I had the good fortune to watch this in the IMAX in 3D recently. Having read the book I knew what to expect, so be warned I am likely to give a couple of spoilers while giving my opinion. This was one of my favourite books from the Harry Potter series and so I was really looking foward to the screen adaptation.

The first 15/20 minutes of this film was in 3D, I personally believe that this was not the best place for the 3D. However, the 3D itself was very good, and the beginning worked with the 3D. There was a change in order for the film, compaired to the book, and a lot of the book was cut out. I was disappointed about some sections that were missed out, however, this was counteracted by a fantastic performance from the young cast.

Ron’s character seemed to develop well in this film and Rupert’s performance was probably one of the best I have seen.  Disappointingly there was no return of Fleur Delacour, however, there was a lovely scene with Lupin and Tonks which itself had been cut from the book. There was not enough of Snape or Malfoy for my liking as I saw this book as the one where their characters should have come into their own.

If you are a fan of the book then be prepared for some of your favourite bits to be cut out. However, there is plenty to enjoy in the film. No matter how dark or sad the film got there was always some comical romance to lighten the mood. There were wolf wistles rippling through the audience when Harry and Ginny shared their first kiss, and roars of laughter when Ron disrupts another tender moment between the two.

One part which was handled well in my eye was the ending, the death of Albus Dumbledore, although short, was a very tender and emotional moment. I found tears welling up in my eyes, and, even though there was no funeral, I was very happy with the way it was portrayed.

This is in my opinion the best film yet, just as it was the best book when it came out. Enjoy the film, and try not to be disappointed if, like me, you think too much was cut out.

8/10 (easily)

I think that is one of the benefits of working for a cinema. Good luck in trying to get a ticket, there aren’t going to be any for a while I don’t think.

Sorry Sarah I’ve purposefully not read this till now because I only just went to see it!

I agree whilst they did cut a lot of the good bits they left in exactly what they had to to move the story along, just enough of Snape in league with the Dark Lord and just enough of Malfoy doing his bit.

When Albus died it was very emotional, my audience was trying to be quiet but pesky kids being pesky kids they were coughing all the time breaking up the atmosphere. Also didn’t like that the kids on my row couldn’t control their bloody bladders. Note to self: never go in the daytime during school holidays…
